Yorkstone steps and Portland limestone steps are most commonly used as entrances to Georgian and Victorian properties in London. York stone is the generic name for sandstone quarried in North West England and varies from grey to buff in colour. Portland limestone comes from the Jurassic coast of southern England and is creamy white in colour. Both stones are very suitable for exterior architectural masonry work as they are fine grained and hard wearing. The Yorkstone or Portland stone step treads usually have a bullnosed profile, this is a fully rounded convex profile on the leading or front edge and the return or side edges when they overhang. The bullnose on Yorkstone or Portland stone step treads serves to protect the stone from chipping. This profile overhangs the riser creating a practical and aesthetically pleasing result. Although the fall of the steps sheds rain water away from the property, neither Yorkstone or Portland stone are waterproof. In cases where a dry useable space is required under steps a waterproof membrane is laid underneath the stone.
